Mistake 1: Selecting equipment before assessing the site

Why a catalogue decision is not a planning decision

It is common for a playground project to start from a piece of equipment someone liked, a combined unit spotted in a catalogue or on a competitor's website, or a supplier's standard package. That pull is understandable: equipment is tangible and easy to picture, while a site assessment is abstract and takes more upfront effort. The problem is that equipment chosen before the site is understood often does not fit the safety zones it requires once the actual plot is measured, or it fits technically but makes poor use of the available space, leaving an awkward layout that has to be justified after the fact rather than one that was deliberately designed. Younger children moving among equipment designed for older, faster users face a higher risk of collision, while older children using equipment scaled for younger users quickly lose interest in it. Planting, structures or a dense equipment layout can block the view from seating areas, entrances and paths, meaning an adult supervising children may not actually be able to see much of the playground from where they would naturally sit or stand. This is easy to miss on a top-down plan, where every element is visible at once, but far more obvious on site once planting has matured or a structure has been built to its full height. Missing space for circulation, seating and future changes

Beyond the equipment and its safety zones, a functional playground needs space to move between zones, seating for supervising adults, and a reasonable reserve for future changes as needs shift or new equipment is added. A site planned to the absolute minimum footprint the equipment itself requires generally ends up feeling cramped in practice and leaves no flexibility if later changes are needed. Mistake 5: Treating accessibility as something added later

Retrofitting accessible routes after the layout is already set

Accessible routes, thresholds and approach paths are considerably harder and more expensive to add after a layout is finished than to plan from the outset. A figure chosen without a defined scope usually leads to one of two outcomes: an underused space that was never correctly sized for its intended purpose, or a scope that has to be cut halfway through once the real cost of the intended project becomes clear.
