The principles below are broadly applied across the playground industry. This is not a list of REDOX products, and no single project is expected to include every element listed. Site conditions, budget, user population and local guidelines together determine which of these elements matter most for a particular location.
Accessible paths and approach routes
Inclusivity begins before a child even reaches the equipment. The route from the car park, public transport or street entrance to the playground, as well as the paths connecting individual play areas within it, need as much careful consideration as the equipment itself. In practice, this generally means firm, stable, slip-resistant surfacing, rather than loose materials that are difficult to cross with a wheelchair, walker or pushchair; paths wide enough for two-way movement, including room to pass another user comfortably; manageable gradients, particularly on sites with natural slope; and clear, uninterrupted connections between entrances, seating, shaded areas and the play equipment itself.
Approach paths are, in practice, where many inclusive intentions quietly fail. A playground can have excellent inclusive equipment and still work poorly for many families if the route to it is uneven, narrow, poorly maintained or interrupted by steps. Path planning deserves attention early in a project, ideally before equipment is chosen, not retrofitted once the layout is already set.
Transfer points and ground-level play
Not every child who wants to use raised play equipment can climb onto it independently, and not every child using a mobility aid wants or attempts a transfer. Two complementary approaches address this. Transfer points are purpose-built elements, for example a platform or step of a specific height and configuration, that let a child move from a wheelchair onto play equipment with appropriate support, giving children who can and want to make that transfer the experience of raised play. Ground-level play, on the other hand, offers activities that require no climbing or transfer at all: play panels, interactive elements and games positioned at a height and location a child can reach directly from a wheelchair, standing, or from the ground.
Both approaches matter and serve different children and different moments. A well-designed playground typically offers a combination of both, rather than relying on a single strategy to cover every user's needs.
A range of physical challenge levels
Inclusive design does not mean removing challenge from a playground. Children of different ages and physical abilities benefit from genuine variety in difficulty, from gentle, low-risk activities that build confidence to more demanding physical challenges that engage older or more physically capable children. A playground that offers only easy options risks becoming under-stimulating for many users, while one built exclusively around demanding equipment can exclude younger children or children with more limited mobility.
The goal is a gradual ladder of challenge within a single playground, so children of different abilities can find something appropriately challenging for themselves, with the child's own ability, rather than an artificial boundary in the equipment layout, determining what they choose to try. This also benefits children whose abilities develop over time, since the same playground stays interesting as a child grows or gains confidence.
Multi-sensory play elements
Play is not only a physical activity. Elements that engage hearing, touch, sight and movement in different combinations broaden the ability of children with different sensory profiles to participate, including children who are blind or have low vision, children who are deaf or hard of hearing, and children with sensory processing differences. Musical or sound-producing elements, tactile panels with varied textures, visually contrasting colours and shapes that aid orientation, and movement-based equipment that provides vestibular and proprioceptive input all contribute to a richer sensory experience for every user, not only children with a specific diagnosis.

Sensory-friendly and quiet zones
Vibrant, colourful playgrounds full of stimulation suit many children perfectly, and, at least at certain moments, do not suit others at all. Children with autism, anxiety or sensory sensitivity, along with plenty of neurotypical children on any given day, benefit from a nearby calmer zone: a space with reduced visual and auditory stimulation, softer materials, some degree of enclosure or shelter, and a clear physical separation from the busiest, loudest parts of the playground.
These zones work best when they are genuinely part of the design, not leftover space. They should be easy to reach without passing through the areas of highest activity, visible enough that a supervising adult still has a clear line of sight, and comfortable enough that a child can stay there for a while without feeling out of place or exposed.
Visibility and supervision
Every playground depends on adults being able to see the children they are responsible for, and inclusive playgrounds carry an additional dimension here: a parent or guardian of a child with additional needs often needs a clear, close line of sight to feel comfortable letting that child explore independently. Layouts that hide activity behind tall structures, dense planting or awkward corners can quietly discourage guardians from allowing free movement, undermining exactly the independence good inclusive design is meant to support.
This is supported by benches positioned with a clear view over the main play zones, paths that keep guardians reasonably close to the equipment their child is using, and layouts that avoid unnecessary visual obstructions. Supervision should be discussed alongside accessibility and challenge levels, not treated as a separate topic addressed afterwards.
