What it looks like in practice
In practice, this mistake shows up as equipment installed closer together than the drawings intended, fall zones overlapping a path, a fence or a neighbouring piece of equipment, or fall zone dimensions that were correct for the equipment as designed but not for the equipment as actually installed. A swing frame shifted thirty centimetres during construction, a slide reoriented differently from the plan, or one piece of equipment swapped for another with a different fall height, any of these can quietly invalidate a fall zone that looked correct on paper.
Why it matters
Fall zones, as defined by EN 1176, exist to reduce the risk of injury during normal and foreseeable use, by keeping a clear space around equipment within which a child could fall or move. Related concepts such as free space and fall height are calculated against the specific equipment and its actual height, not a general assumption. A fall zone only makes sense if it reflects the playground as built. Checking against the drawing alone assumes the installation followed the plan exactly, which is not always the case.
What to check before opening
Before opening, confirm that fall zone dimensions match the equipment actually installed on site, not just the equipment shown in the original design. Confirm that no fall zone overlaps a neighbouring piece of equipment, a path, a fence or another site boundary. If equipment was swapped, moved or adjusted during installation, the fall zone calculation should be checked again rather than assuming the original figures still apply.
