Equipment footprint versus safety zone
The equipment footprint is the physical space the structure itself occupies on the ground: footings, posts, the outline of a platform. The safety zone is the additional space around that footprint which must remain clear and appropriately surfaced. EN 1176-1 calls this space the minimum space and divides it into the space occupied by the equipment, the free space through which a user moves when the equipment imposes movement, and the fall space through which a user passes when falling from an elevated part. As an early planning reference: fall space extends at least 1.5 m around elevated parts of the equipment, and for free fall heights above 1.5 m it grows according to the formula 2/3 of fall height plus 0.5 m. For equipment with moving parts, such as swings, the zone typically extends considerably further in the direction of movement than to the sides, because the hazard area of a swinging seat is not symmetrical; it depends on the direction of travel.
The safety zone is not an optional margin that a designer can shrink if the site is tight. In planning, it is treated as an integral part of the equipment's actual footprint, because the exact dimension of the zone for a given element depends on its free fall height and pattern of movement, and needs to be confirmed against the relevant part of the standard and the manufacturer's specification for that specific product, not assumed from a similar product. Overlapping safety zones between neighbouring equipment
When two pieces of equipment are placed close together, the standard's rules on zone overlap apply. Fall spaces may overlap in most cases, but not where imposed movement is involved, and where neighbouring equipment has different fall heights, the larger impact area governs. Free spaces for equipment with imposed movement, such as swings and slides, must not overlap either with each other or with another element's fall space. In practice this means equipment with imposed movement is what drives up the required area the most, and an initial layout sketch on paper often turns out to be more compact than what can actually be built, because a designer working only with footprint dimensions, without zones drawn to scale, will almost always underestimate the real spacing equipment needs.
Circulation paths, seating and supervision space
Beyond the equipment and its safety zones, a functional playground also needs circulation routes so that users, and where relevant maintenance staff or emergency services, do not have to cross active zones to move between different parts of the site. The standard explicitly requires that main pedestrian routes must not pass through equipment's free space. Seating also needs to be positioned so that adults supervising children have a clear line of sight, since a bench placed behind an obstruction that blocks the view does not serve its purpose, and a bench inside a fall space is itself an obstruction the standard does not allow. Reserve space for future changes
A playground planned to the absolute minimum footprint required by the initial equipment list leaves no room for adding equipment later, adjusting a layout that turns out not to work as intended once built, or improving accessibility down the line. Building in a reasonable reserve above the calculated minimum is generally sound planning practice, particularly for public and institutional sites that are expected to stay in service for many years and may need to change and develop over that time.
